I've recently started using Google Chat as an alternative to Slack. There are some clear benefits and drawbacks Google Chat over Slack but that's far outside of scope for this document.
With Slack, I found peace using Comic Sans as my font of choice. I wanted to replicate this in the Google Chat PWA. I thought it would be simple but what I ended up doing was:
- Install Firefox PWA support (any attempts to forcibly override fonts through extensions, etc failed)
- Set the font choice
- Hamburger icon -> Settings
- Change Default font to font of choice
- Under Advanced uncheck "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above"
- Allow icons to be rendered (the folder, thread, pin, etc icons rendered as text, this is because icon fonts are being ignored by default)
- Open basic URL input box with CTRL-L
- Go to
about:config - Search for
browser.display.use_document_fonts.icon_font_allowlistsetting - Add
Google Symbols Subsetto the end of the list
